Truth be told, I am no great baker. I know my way around a stove really well. But when it comes to baking, well, that’s another story! That being said, I do love a good DIY project, and I’ve got the perfect cookies in a jar recipe that you can gift to your family and friends.
With the holidays just around the corner, you might be wracking your brains trying to think of what to purchase your loved ones (I know I have this issue every year!). I think handmade, personalized gifts are so much more meaningful than ones you can buy in a store. They are also usually way less expensive! And as a foodie, I love a holiday present that you can actually eat and is made with love!
I usually keep a healthy stash of Bernardin® canning jars around the house. They come in pretty handy for making vinaigrettes, canning things, storing sauces, and pickling things. They can also be used in a variety of other ways, and in craft projects, like this one! The smooth sides to the jars are perfect to display the contents too. If you use Bernardin® canning jars (or even if you don’t), keep reading, as I’ve got a special giveaway of a canning set plus a $500 gift certificate to Canadian Tire!
I recently came across a cookies in a jar recipe while browsing on Pinterest, and I thought, “what better way to use my Bernardin jars this holiday season?!” This double chocolate chip cookies in a jar recipe is so easy to put together (even an amateur baker, like myself, can do it). You can assemble a few dozen on a weekend afternoon and then give them as stocking stuffers, as little gifts for co-workers, family or friends.
The jars will contain only the dry ingredients for the cookies. When ready to make the cookies, your friends or loved ones simply have to mix the dry ingredients together with the necessary wet ingredients and then bake in the oven. So, you’ll need to ensure you print or hand-write the wet ingredients and rest of the baking instructions on a tag that you can attach to the lid of the jar, as I have done below.
This is what you’ll write or print:
You will need:
- 1/8 cup of softened butter
- 1/4 large egg, beaten
- 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
To Make Cookies:
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Mix butter, egg, and vanilla together until creamy.
- Add dry ingredients from jar and mix together well.
- Form 2-inch balls out of the dough and place a few inches apart on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until browned. Oven temperatures vary, so keep an eye out to ensure they don’t burn.
The ingredients included in this 250mL Bernardin® canning jar will be enough to yield about a half dozen cookies. You can multiply this recipe by 2 for the 500mL canning jars, and by 4 for the 1L sized jars.
Here is the recipe for the dry ingredients for these double chocolate chip cookies in a jar!
Double Chocolate Chip Cookies in a Jar
Ingredients
- 1/8 cup sugar
- 1/8 cup brown sugar
- 1/16 cup cocoa powder
- 5/16 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/8 tsp. baking soda
- 1/8 tsp. sea salt
- 1/6 cup chocolate chips or chunks
- 1/6 cup white chocolate chips
Instructions
- Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Layer into your canning jar in the following order: sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, flour mixture, chocolate chunks, white chocolate chips.
- Close lid, decorate as you wish, and give as a gift!
