I’m selective about the trends I get on board with. When it comes to my shopping philosophy, I will more often splurge on the timeless pieces (as I view it as a much better investment of my money) and look for the cheaper options for trendy styles. Style is enduring, but fashion is ever-changing; and there is so much turn-around with inventory in stores that it is truly difficult (and expensive) to keep up with every trend.
There are 2 current trends that I have to say I’m really NOT feeling, and I can’t wait till they’re on the decline: handbag pom poms (or “puffs”) and flare jeans! Who else is with me? I’m sorry to say it, but I think furry, little puffs remove sophistication from a beautiful handbag (they also remind me of the hand sanitizer bag clips – like, whoever thought that making hand sanitizer an accessory was a good idea?!), and I don’t think we need to revisit the 70s again with the bell-bottoms. But I digress.
For this post, I want to talk about a trend that I am totally in love with and seriously can’t get enough of: lace-up things. Give me all the lace-up things – lace-up tops and especially lace-up shoes!
Shoes: Missguided; Jeans: Topshop Canada
I initially fell in love sometime around last summer, when I got my Steve Madden “Eleanorr” lace-up ghillie flats in taupe (I basically got them for free using a gift card to the mall I won for a best photo contest – score!). I lived in those babies throughout the end of the summer and fall, practically right up until there was snow on the ground!
I’m also loving lace-up tops! They’re totally feminine, without going overboard on the sexiness. I think they would make any girl feel fashionable and fierce at the same time.
For this look, I’ve kept it very simple, and I’m back in my favourite colour: black! I’ve paired my lace-up top with high(ish)-waisted black jeans, a grey cardigan with leather details on the sleeves, and leather over-the-knee boots.
This is also the debut of my new Saint Laurent black leather tote (a recent example of an investment-type, non-trendy purchase 😉 )
Top: Urban Outfitters; Jeans: Rag & Bone; Cardigan: Rudsak; Boots: Topshop Canada; Tote: Saint Laurent

that’s nice outfit! i love them!
Thank you, Sakura! I think simple is always best 😉
Cool blog, Krystal!
How would you style flat lace ups?
Hey Arlet! Hope you’re doing well and thanks so much for checking out my blog! Lace-up flats are like my favourite things ever!!! So very versatile. I pair them with jeans (if the jeans are tight/skinnies, then you can just fold the bottoms to accommodate the laces, and if the jeans are boyfriend jeans, then again, roll the bottom and you can decide how high up your legs to go with the laces). I also recommend styling with leggings, culottes, and even trousers for work. Let me know if this helps and/or if you have any other questions!
Great pics Krys! The outfit and accessories look great!
Thanks so much for your kind comments and for checking out my blog 🙂
I love your fashion sense and I agree that timeless and “non-trendy” is the way to go in order to maximize your wardrobe with quality pieces on a limited budget. I also love wearing jeans as my lifestyle doesn’t really warrant much more than casual wear. Because I am somewhat curvy, skinny jeans are not necessarily flattering on my body type unless I pair them with an appropriate top. What would you recommend for women (like me) who do not actually feel comfortable wearing skinny jeans unless they are wearing a top long enough to cover their core that may even extend down past their hips?

Hey Laur! Thanks for checking out my blog and for the question! I’m also curvy (I think it runs in our family, haha), so I think fit is super important when it comes to jeans (and anything, really). I often put on extra weight in the winter; so when my skinnies get a little snug, I definitely go with longer tops and sweaters. For yourself, when purchasing jeans or trying them on, perhaps try low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise jeans to see which ones fit the best. I also love a good pair of jeans with a lot of stretch (so denim with spandex is a good option). If you still don’t like the skinny jeans then–you’ll laugh as I advise this–but “mom” jeans are actually back in (so are flares, but I’m not feeling that trend). Mom jeans are high-waisted and have a looser fit. Hopefully this helps!
Lol regarding “mom” jeans. I should have added that I sometimes look a little top-heavy wearing skinny jeans. Straight leg or a slight boot-cut seem to make me look more in proportion. And yes, stretchy jeans always helps for comfort.
Yes, I know, haha! I have yet to acquire a pair of mom jeans, but it’ll happen. I’ll have to really make sure they fit well! But try my suggestion about the low, mid and high rise skinnies; and if not skinnies, then try other tapered jeans – I find they pair better with heels and booties 🙂
Love the look dineandfash! awesome blog 🙂
