Presentation is just as important as flavour. As the oft-quoted saying goes, we eat with our eyes first. But outside of how we present our food when entertaining, in my opinion, one of the most critical aspects of the Thanksgiving experience is décor.
Have you started getting ready for Thanksgiving? Honestly, there are few holidays I get as excited about! Mainly because Thanksgiving involves gathering with loved ones, expressing our gratitude, and breaking bread. While the occasion will undoubtedly look a little different this year, I do hope you are still able to celebrate in an intimate setting. Alex and I will be hosting my family this year. So, I’ve seized the opportunity to translate all the lovely Fall harvest textures, colours, and flavours that I’m so inspired by into a showstopping tablescape. Oh, and nary an orange or white pumpkin shall be in sight!
With that said, I present to you, my Fall Harvest-Inspired Thanksgiving Table:
We recently got the Terra 16-piece dinnerware set from D.O.T. Furniture (which, if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have seen me gushing about in my stories lately). Made of terra-cotta with beautiful exposed bottoms and edges, this set is simple yet elegant, modern yet rustic! Individually hand-dipped in glaze to finish, each piece looks ever so slightly different – adding to its character and charm! I’d been looking for a minimal (and good quality) set of dinnerware like this for a long time, with no luck. So, I can’t tell you how excited we were to pick this up and replace our old, boring dinnerware. These are perfect for every day use as well. Plus, I’m happy to support D.O.T. Furniture, which is a Canadian company that’s been family-owned and operated for over 20 years!
Forming the base for my table setting were these Palma woven rectangle placemats. I love woven textures, and these placemats have a rustic feel that adds a bit of contrast to the dinnerware set, while complementing the Fall harvest vibe of my tablescape. Very versatile, these would equally be suitable for dining outdoors. I love a good set of matte gold flatware, but antique would also work here. I used white linen napkins tucked into simple gold napkin rings, with a bit of greenery and sage inside. I then finished the table setting with mismatched, vintage-inspired glassware in amber and clear.
Since your table will be the focal point for Thanksgiving, your tablescape should be a reflection of the celebration and season. I didn’t want to hide this dreamy farmhouse table with a tablecloth, so instead, I bunched a linen tablecloth and used it as a runner. From there, I strategically placed vintage candle holders with white taper candles, this Antique-looking ceramic vase with handle, and this ceramic geometric vase on the table to tie the Fall harvest look together (it’s a good idea to set your larger items down first before adding your greenery). Dried flowers and grasses inside the Antique-looking vase totally elevated the look. Like the dinnerware and placemats, these vases can be used around the home outside of Thanksgiving too.
Layering on the greenery and fresh fruit was then a breeze (I recommend using small saucers underneath your fruit, so they don’t drip and ruin your tablecloth or table). For the greenery, I used a combination of Salal (lemon leaf), Cinerea Eucalyptus, and Parvi Eucalyptus that I picked up from the market and a local florist. Other good options are: Silver Dollar Eucalyptus, Regular Eucalyptus, and you can’t go wrong with Ruscus (either Italian or Israeli). For the fruits, I used pomegranates, Bosc pears and figs – leaving some whole and halving some for additional texture and interest.
Overall, I’m so happy with how my Fall harvest table for Thanksgiving turned out and I can’t wait for my family to see it! In an upcoming post, I’ll be sharing more details about the food I prepared for this special occasion. But for purposes of this post, I want to give you a little sneak peek at some of the dishes and drinks because they look simply amazing in the Terra 16-piece dinnerware set!
I adore the two-toned finish to the soup bowls in the Terra 16-piece dinnerware set. And how yummy does this white bean soup look in the bowls? (recipe coming soon)
The mugs that come in the Terra 16-piece set are such a great size and can comfortably fit 3 large marshmallows, in case you were wondering 😉
