My fiancé, Alex, and I spend a lot of time together, in general, but lately, I’ve been going to a lot of food events and brunching with other Instagrammers on the weekend. So, I thought it would be a nice change of pace to go on a brunch date with just Alex, since one of our favourite things to do together is eat, after all!

We’d been to Thoroughbred Food & Drink for dinner in the past and really enjoyed our meal. So, it’s always a bonus when a restaurant you already like has a brunch service, and best of all, takes resos!

The “low tea” brunch menu is short, but the offerings certainly weren’t short on anything. I prefer smaller menus in any event, since I’d rather go to a restaurant that does a small number of dishes really well than a large number of dishes just average.

I started with a latte ($3.25).

The latte art bore a striking resemblance to the succulent that was on our table (not sure if intentional).

For our food, I opted for the grilled cheese eggs benny ($14),

while Alex ordered the jerk chicken hash ($14).

As if that wasn’t enough for the two of us, the kitchen was kind enough to send out extra dishes, including the gingerbread pancake party ($10)potato wedges ($3), and the mustard greens ($3). Very quickly, our quaint, little brunch for 2 became a feast fit for 4 people!

The mustard greens were tangy and we loved the heat from the peppers. Speaking of heat, the jerk chicken hash had a good ‘kick’ to it as well, but wouldn’t be too spicy for the average palate.

The pancakes were so fluffy and doughy. The cinnamon is a nice touch; and to me, the dish tasted like a warm apple pie (rather than gingerbread). All so delish, though!

But the star of the whole meal was undoubtedly the grilled cheese eggs benny. Whoever had the GENIUS idea of slapping cheese between two slices of bread and then grilling before putting peameal bacon and a poached egg with Hollandaise on top deserves to win an award! This dish alone is worth multiple return visits!

Open Sundays only for brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thoroughbred Food & Drink deserves to be on anyone’s short list for brunch in the city. Oh, and did I mention that it’s in a convenient location (especially now that the construction next door no longer obstructs the view), is super cute inside, has great lighting, and the service is friendly? Yeah, you need to check it out (and when you do, I’m sure you’ll agree that the grilled cheese eggs benny is one of the greatest things in life!). Bon Appétit!
